Who is Asus?
A very well-established Taiwanese computer hardware company. I tell people often to open up their computers and they will get to know Asus then. They have also been making Macbooks for Apple for years, and have more recently have become more popular in the U.S. for their quality notebooks.
Can I use Microsoft Office on the Eee PC?
The Eee PC comes pre-loaded with about 40 different programs including Open Office, which is fully compatible with Microsoft Office. It saves in .doc, .xls., and ppt., and also opens the same. The best part about it is that whenever updates to the software are made, you can download them for free.
What is Linux and how is it different from Windows or a Mac?
Well, there is too much to be said about this, and I refer you to this helpful article to answer some of your more detailed questions. Nevertheless, I will point out that Linux is a different operating system, but it is not new. It is very established, and is used by many major corporations on their servers for its stability and security. It uses a UNIX system, just like Apple Macintosh, which means that it is immune to viruses! The majority of computer consumers use office applications, the internet and some multimedia applications. Linux uses open-source software that is great to use not only for its familiarity (like Firefox web browser), but its security (virus-free), and affordability (free).
Can you play CD's or DVDs on it?
The Eee PC does not have any moving parts, including a CD/DVD drive, and the purpose is two-fold. First of all, the Eee PC is designed for durability which is also the reason it uses a solid-state drive and does not have an optical drive. It is designed to be shock-proof. I have dropped my device accidental on a couple of occasions, and my only concern was over scratches, not hardware. As expected, on both occasions, it was absolutely fine. The other reason why it does not have an optical drive is because digital media is so accessible via internet, so necessity plays a major role as well.
What about storage space? Can you store a lot of stuff on the Eee PC?
It depends on your definition of “stuff.” The 4G model obviously has a 4 gigabyte solid-state drive, which uses about 2.5 gigs for the operating system and pre-installed software. The remaining space is for storage, and you can also uses the high capacity SD drive for additional storage, as well as a one of the three USB drives to plug in a flash drive. The Eee PC's design is optimized for portability, and does not attempt to be a desktop replacement but rather, a portable secondary computer. If you want it for music or video storage, a SD card or thumb drive, or portable hard drive, or even web-based application (like Xdrive or Picasa ) will work great.
Will it work with my printer, external mouse, camera, other USB devices?
Did you say USB devices? Then the answer is yes! The Eee PC has 3 USB ports. Sorry, no old relic serial devices allowed. Most every USB device nowadays are designed to be plug and play and cross-platform, and so with Linux you benefit from the advancements in technology. You can even plug in an external monitor and an external hard drive, and then you have a desktop replacement!
Can I use the Eee PC with iTunes?
You can use it with your iPod, but you cannot play encrypted AAC files, or download music from the iTunes store. You can play mp3s flawlessly, and the music player detects your iPod once you pug it in.
What if I want to add more software? How does customization work?
For a small additional price ($35) typically, we customize your Eee PC so you can have additional buttons placed in the easy mode, and an advanced mode enabled and the additional programs you desire added for you. All you have to do is request a customization form with your purchase, and we will be sure to make your new Eee PC customized for you!
Can I put Windows XP on it?
Yes, if you have a licensed copy of XP you can install it with an external optical drive.
Does it have a warranty?
Yes, a 1 year manufacturer warranty comes standard from Asus.
